Today’s Page Brief features characters from Animal Instincts, Legend Cove Book #3. Enjoy!

From time to time there’s multi-part Page Brief’s that go together. I think of it as a Page Brief Serial and I name them. The below Page Brief Serial Temptation Maneuvers features the books at the time I wrote these Page Brief’s that were available in my Legend Cove series. Eventually when books are released in the Legend Cove series an Page Brief might be written and if it is it will be added to the Temptation Maneuvers Page Brief Serial. So this Page Brief Serial is a continuous one (at my discretion/time permits).

Jaden mirrored Synda’s movements. They flowed together in a beautiful dance that would take out any opponent. He moved the other way and she did the opposite and then they came together and moved as one.

“You know if anyone saw us when we said we would be relaxing and instead we’re here training they would think these two don’t know how to relax.” Synda laughed. “That’s to show you they don’t know us.”

“Those that do know us would understand.” Jaden continued his movements matching hers. “Besides we don’t really care what others think.”

“True. That’s what makes you a good match for me.” Synda winked.

“Although it took some convincing for you to get that.”

“I’m never going to live that down.”

“You’re trying to outmaneuver me and sacrificing for everyone.” Jaden glanced at her pointedly.

“Yeah yeah. I’ve heard it many times since. No one is letting it go.” Synda shrugged. “I figure let you all get it out your system and eventually it’ll fade into distant memory.”

Jaden didn’t respond to that or correct her wrong assumption. Instead he focused on now. The training together was enjoyment, preparedness and just them. He knew the more prepared they were the more they both could relax. They would face whatever came together as a united pair.

“I’m enjoying making a home with you here in Legend Cove.” Synda said.

Jaden smiled pleased. For her to say that they had come a long way. Synda had experienced a lot of loss and was used to sacrificing for others. She didn’t think of herself first but he slowly was getting her to see that she was just as important. That she didn’t have to do everything on her own. She was unlearning behaviors that she had built up over years. He knew it would take time and he was willing to do it.

“I’m enjoying being your home. I will always be by your side.” Jaden vowed.

Synda inclined her head. “When we’re done training for the day what do you want to do?”

“How about a little bit of hide and seek?” Jaden smirked. “You use your various shifter sides to track me. There might be something for you if you can find me.”

“Why do you sound so excited?” Synda’s eyes flashed in challenge. “You must think I won’t be able to find you.”

“You can try.” Jaden replied.

“Accepted.” Synda laughed. “A little training and some hide and seek with very interesting stakes.”

“A day like this is unapologetically us.” Jaden nodded.

“Well there goes our plan for today.” Veronica sighed.

Unsure what she meant Zayne joined her as she looked out the window. Confused he still didn’t see what the problem was. He looked at her and she was still looking out the window with a forlorn expression.

“I’m not sure what the problem is.” Zayne looked again trying to see what the issue would be.

“It’s raining.” Veronica brows furrowed. “We can’t go have fun like we planned to. “

“Really. I’m still not seeing the issue.”

“We’ll get all wet. And having fun while it’s raining well it puts a damper and stuff.” Veronica wrinkled her nose. “I know you can have fun in the rain. I’ve done it before but with the things we have planned it’s better if it’s not raining.”

“We’ll postpone what we initially had planned. But let’s change plans. I’m about to blow your mind on the kind of fun you can have in the rain.” Zayne wiggled his fingers. “Come with me.”

He held out his hands. Looking unsure Veronica gave herself into his care. Zayne led her towards the back of the house. As they neared the patio doors music began to play. Zayne smiled as he created the atmosphere. When they reached the patio doors with a thought he opened them. Then led her outside. Veronica gasped looking around. Zayne watched the joy on her face. The various colored rain fell creating a sense of mystique.

“You did this for us.” Veronica said awed.

“Yes.” Zayne shifted his hold. “Dance with me.”

Veronica followed him. They moved with the sensuality of the rhythm of the music. Zayne held her in his arms as he enjoyed this moment with her. It didn’t matter what they were doing any time spent with her was precious.

“There’s so much time we have with each other.” Veronica spoke quietly. “And every one makes me realize how lucky I am. These precious moments with you is something I will forever treasure. You are my forever treasure.”

“Me too. You are my forever treasure.” Zayne kissed her deeply.

Marcus stepped inside the house. Rayne’s vehicle wasn’t in the driveway. He resisted the urge to dance. Since she wasn’t home he wasn’t going to feel too guilty he wasn’t sharing something they both loved. He slid off his shoes then held onto the bag and went to the living room. Marcus sat on the couch placing the bag next to him. He pulled out the first item.

“All mine.” Marcus took out the first piece and took a bite.

He moaned as the decant taste filled his mouth.

“What are you eating?” Rayne asked.

Marcus eyes widened and he swallowed. “Nothing.” He stuffed the items back in the bag and hid it using his body between where he sat and the arm of the couch.

“So you’re making those obscene noises for nothing.” Rayne said as she came around the couch.

I’m not going to feel guilty for not sharing. It’s every man or woman for themselves. Marcus tried to not let her silence and gaze get to him. He thought of what he had. Rayne continued to watch him silently.

“Fine.” Marcus sighed then pulled out the bag then the first item.

Rayne glanced at what he held then at him. “Really?” She shook her head. “And to think I shared with you when I had those almond candies.”

“You weren’t home. At least I thought you weren’t.” Marcus frowned. “Where is your car?”

“I’m having some maintenance done on it.” Rayne sat beside him. “I bet you were glad I supposedly wasn’t home.”

Marcus wasn’t admitting that. “Taste this.” He took out a piece and held it to her lips.

Rayne took a bite then moaned. “Toasted Coconut Marshmallows.” She whimpered. “Where did you get these?”

“I went to check on the guys who were working that sort of street fair for some of the local businesses.” Marcus said. “One of the businesses is newly opened. They make a lot of interesting things including these beauties.” He fed her more.

She took another bite and moaned again before speaking. “You better have the address.”

“They make custom made things.” Marcus whispered. “You can choose what you want.”

“Why are you whispering?” Rayne said in the same tone.

“It deserves reverence and awe.” Marcus continued to whisper.

“I can agree to that.” Rayne nodded. “And someone wasn’t going to share these.”

“I was going to sample it for us.” Marcus protested. “Make sure it is up to our standards. Then if they were take you to the shop.”

“Yeah…I believe that.” Rayne snorted. “My body is really happy right now so I’m going to pretend I believe you. Give me some more.”

Marcus gave her more. Rayne made noises of pleasure as she ate. Marcus waited until she finished that piece. He pulled out another bag then held it before taking out a piece and offering it to her. Rayne looked at him but took a bite.

Her eyes widened then. “Toasted Caramel Coconut Marshmallows.”

She abruptly stood and pulled him up. Rayne dragged him behind her. Marcus went willingly.

“My car is not here. You’re driving.” Rayne said. “Put on your shoes.”

“Of course.” Marcus smirked as he put on his shoes. “Standards Met.”

“So met. Surpassed met.” Rayne said. “Sharing is a good thing.”

“Yep.” Marcus nodded. “Things are better with you.”

He let her pull him out the door.

Allison walked down the hall into the entryway. She stilled and blinked not sure what she was seeing.

“Ummm…Richard why are you covered in dirt, paint and god knows what else?” Allison pointed. “Go around back. Why the hell did you come inside like that? You’re going to mess up the house.”

“It’s been a day.” Richard scowled. “Meet me out back. I need help washing this off.”

Richard backed out the open front door and stomped around the side of the house. Allison went to close the door and snickered as she heard him cursing. She chuckled as she gathered some things to help him get cleaned up. Soon she went out the backdoor then set the things on the table closest to the hose.

She glanced at Richard and laughed.

“It’s not funny.” Richard grumbled.

“The expression on your face.” She laughed harder and held her side. “Oh my god. Wait.” She grabbed her cell and quickly took a picture.

“Allison.” He growled.

“I need to have this for future usage.” Allison gestured. “Come closer so we can get you cleaned up.” She pulled on some gloves.

“Gloves are a good idea.” Richard came closer eyeing what she had brought. “Where do we even start?” He sighed.

“I’m kissing you right now, Mister Grumpster.” Allison grimaced. “Imagine it since I’m not doing it until you are clean. I don’t want whatever you have on you on me. Lower your head.” She pulled something out his hair. “Is that egg shells? What the hell were you doing? I thought you were helping some of your friends with something.”

Allison continued to pull stuff out of his hair.

“I was. We didn’t realize when someone decided to sled hammer a wall it would come down taking and that brought down the second floor. A second floor which had a whole bunch of crap on it. Crap that rained down on us. Which upended the paint, dirt and so on to combine with the stuff falling from the second floor. ” Richard shook his head.

“Don’t move like that. Stuff is flying.” Allison urged. “So let me get this straight. Someone…”She looked at him pointedly. “Started swinging a sledge hammer without checking the safety first. Of course they did not. Which caused all sort of problems. And caused you and I assume others to end up looking like this.”

“I…”Richard sighed loud and long looking mournful. “You know I hate waiting. They were moving so slow and talking things to death. And come on it was a sledge hammer. So many shiny tools just waiting to be used.”

“And that’s one of your things. It was tempting you. Saying sweet nothings to you to come and use it.”

“Yes.” Richard hissed.

“Was it worth it?” Allison pointed at how he looked.

“Yes.” Richard nodded vigorously.

“You know what. You are hopeless.” Allison stated. “Hopeless.”

“They won’t let me use any more tools without supervision.” Richard pouted.

“I can’t blame them.” Allison grimaced as she continued taking things out of his hair.

“That means you.”

She looked at him surprised. “Really. Why me?”

“I might have had help using tools without proper thought.” Richard shrugged.

“Wait…how many of you did that?” Allison was suspicious knowing it had been quite a few of them.

“All but two of us.” Richard avoided her eyes. “But in our defense, it was shiny, seducing tools and so much to destroy.”

“Two?” Allison stared at him in disbelief. “Wasn’t there-“

“Let’s not discuss how many of us there was.” Richard said. “It’s been decided we need supervision. They picked you.” Richard scowled. “We still can’t figure out how we were outvoted that we need supervision. Especially when everyone but the two who didn’t use tools was the only ones who voted for you to supervise. That’s some iffy math. Something is fishy there.”

Allison stifled a laugh. She already figured out those who had held out and voted for supervision had threatened something. Richard wouldn’t tell her at least not now. She’d get it out of him at another time. Her cell beeped. Allison took it out and read the text.

“Supervision Necessary.” Allison glanced at Richard. “Seems like they want to make sure I know about the necessary supervision.”

“I told them I would let you know.” Richard turned so she could reach the back of his hair. “So untrusting.”

Allison didn’t reply to that instead. “Don’t worry I have your back. I’ll be the supervision necessary.”

“You think you’re funny.”

Allison left that one alone also and kept cleaning him up.

Micah went outside as Syn had left him instructions to do. He walked down the path enjoying the scents surrounding him. Their garden was blooming with life. It was a day off from the club and he was enjoying it with Syn. Although she was acting a little secretive earlier as they had relaxed and just spent time together. Syn was nervous about something. He didn’t push knowing she would tell him eventually. Spotting her, even with her back to him he was captivated about everything that made her.

“Micah.” Syn didn’t turn to face him. “I wanted to try something with you. Will you let me?”

“Yes.” He didn’t need to know what she wanted to do.

He trusted her wholeheartedly. Syn released a breath. She nodded then faced him. She held out her hand to him. Micah stepped forward and placed his fingers against hers. The spark of power flowed between them. He loved how their powers recognized each other.

Silently Syn stared at him then she molded the power. Surprised and pleased Micah let his power flow letting her control it. They had come a long way. There was a time Syn wasn’t as comfortable with power or using it. Now she embraced it more.

The area started to light with a plethora of colors. Syn moved them further into the clearing. Then a large canvas appeared before them. Syn guided the power towards the blank canvas. Micah watched as the images started to fill the bare page. He just fed her power as she built what she wanted. As the images flowed along the paper Micah stared in awe at this woman who had brought him to life. Until her he hadn’t known such happiness. The painting became engulfed in flames then suddenly the fire dissipated.

Micah stared at what was revealed. “Living Canvas.” He breathed out the words.

The painting depicted that joining when they pledged their souls to each other. It was so lifelike that it looked real as if happening in real time.

He looked at her. Syn pulled him close and leaned against him.

“This was one of the many moments with you I want to do a living canvas of.” Syn smiled softly. “For my first time it came out very well.”

Syn’s smug tone made him laugh.

“I’m going to enjoy doing many living canvases with you now and forever.” Micah kissed her.

“You’re going to get me into so much trouble.” he said in that voice that was all silk and heat.

“Whenever I hear you speak I still think I hit my head,” Lou stated. “And you still sound just like Goliath from Gargoyles.”

“That’s one of my favorite cartoons.” Sinclair replied.

She went closer to her dream man. He was all hers. Lou inhaled and shuddered as his delicious scent of sandalwood and vanilla filled her.

“You always smell so good.” Louisa sighed. “I also still think at times this is a really good concussion dream. And then I realize nope this is now my life.” Lou sighed happily.

“Our life. I swear Lou I don’t know what you’ve done to me.” Sinclair sounded so disgruntled.

“I have no idea what you’re blaming me for. But…” Lou pouted. “What happened to my kiss? You usually look at me with that smoldering look of possession and you always kiss me. ” She poked him in his back then shoulder. “I love that. You’re not allowed to stop. You’re not allowed to withhold from me. Don’t make me get feisty with you. Then if I have to get physical which could get dicey.”

“No physical. I don’t want you to hurt yourself.” Sinclair said.

The man knew her to well. With her klutziness it would be iffy or more probable she’d hurt something instead of him. Not that she really wanted to hurt him.

“True. But why aren’t you looking at me. And my kiss.” Lou poked him again.

“Woman I swear you have bamboozled me.” Sinclair sighed then muttered. “There’s no escaping it. I’m going to just have to show her. I’m gone gone gone. Strangely I love that…maybe. Christ I have no idea. No getting all weepy or stuff like that. Promise me Lou.” Sinclair said firmly.

“Ok.” She said cautiously.

Lou had no idea why he was acting so strangely. Sinclair turned to face her and her eyes were immediately drawn to what he held. She could swear her heart exploded although she knew it wasn’t physically possible. Lou blinked then looked at him. Sinclair was trying to look all tough and firm. She looked back at what he held and no matter what he did he was failing.

“Oh my God you got me a puppy and a kitten.” Lou blinked and sniffled.

“No no crying.” Sinclair shook his head. “Christ who am I kidding. Get ready for more tears.” He shifted to the side.
Lou heard the barks and meows. She stepped forward and saw there was a box with more kittens and puppies in them.

“You got me many puppies and kittens.” Lou wailed.

“I should have said we’re fostering them until we can get them good homes.” Sinclair blew out a breath. “I should have thought of this before showing you. This is going to be a problem.”

“You’re so funny.” Lou patted him on the cheek. “That’s past you’s problem. Current and future you are going to enjoy having our new children. They can grow up together. Keep each other company.” Lou clapped her hands. “Ohhhh…my babies let’s go get you settled. We have a lot of shopping to do.”

“Lou, what have you done to me?” Sinclair whimpered.

“As you told me many times come into your life and changed it for the better.” Lou kissed him on the cheek.

She picked up the box and cooed at the new babies.

“Lou, you’re a perfect partner for me. I’m going to enjoy all the surprises you will certainly keep showing me.” Sinclair blew out a breath. “I have no regrets being with you. Even if you love adopting so many pets. At least I won’t have to worry about you with them like I do with Sampson and Delilah.”

“Keep hoping.” Lou laughed. “I can’t wait to introduce you to your siblings.” She said to her new pets. “Delilah is my cow and Sampson is my bull.” Lou turned away.

“What have I done?” Sinclair sounded horrified.

“No regrets.” Lou cackled.

Cautiously Mateo looked around at the familiar neighborhood. “When you said come with me. I didn’t even question getting in the car to go someplace unknown with you.“ He looked around again. “Past me thinks current me needs to ask more questions so we can warn future me. Why are we here?”

“It’s going to be fun. It’ll be epic when we’re done with all the stops.” Rene’s eyes sparkled devilishly.

“Stops? There’s going to be more?” Mateo said quietly as she parked.

“A few. The plan is to…” Rene shrugged.

Mateo listened as she explained the plan and where they were going. Surprised he was intrigued by her boldness and cunning.

“You’re about to make a lot of people around many parts of Singleton a little peeved.” Mateo laughed. “Let’s do this.”

“I knew you’d be in. Let’s go have some fun.” Rene cackled.

He got out of the vehicle noting that the overhead light did not come on. He closed the door then waited. She joined him by the passenger side already carrying the bag he had noted that was in the backseat earlier. Silently they approached the house. In moments they were inside then did what they came to do before leaving. Soon they were back in the vehicle and on the way to the next house.

“One down.” He said. “Some of them will be trickier and harder to get into without anyone noticing.”

“I know. We’re warming up by doing the easier before we tackle the harder ones.” Rene snickered. “That’ll teach a lesson.”

“They should have known testing you all’s security was a bad idea.” Mateo shook his head. “So we have certain places to hit. What places are the others hitting?”

As she drove Rene filled him in. Mateo was impressed by the planning and logistics they had put into this. Soon they were at the next house. They repeated what they did before continuing doing it from house to house. As predicted some were easier than others.

“That was fun.“ Mateo snickered as she parked the vehicle in their driveway. “How long do you think it’ll take for them to realize what happened?”

Rene got out of the vehicle and met him by the passenger side before replying. “It’s going to be fun waiting to see.” She laced her fingers with his as they closed the door and headed towards the house.

They opened the door and went inside. Mateo hugged her and Rene snuggled into him.

“I’m glad we could do this surprise carper together.” He said.

“Remember that when the others try to get their revenge.” Rene laughed. “Who do you think is going to get most inventive?”

“Between your people, my people, the Locke’s, a few other people around Singleton, or maybe the mayor. It’s kinda hard to choose.” Mateo shrugged. “It doesn’t matter we’ll whether it together.”

“Together.” Rene kissed him.

“I’m going to get this.” Asher glared. “You’re not going to beat me. If I can master all the things I have you’re not going to be my defeat.”

“Asher.” The voice that usually calmed her came.

“It’s ok.” Asher growled. “I’ve got this.”

“I know you do but we all need help sometimes.” Terrence said gently.

She sighed. She knew he was right but she really wanted to do this for him. She looked up at him. From the start he wasn’t easy to dismiss. The man was magnetic and he did the one thing she wasn’t used to—treated her like a person. He had captured her with his warmth and being down to earth. He was also a good conversationalist. She loved being around a man with a brain.

“Why is this so difficult?” Asher held up her hands. “It shouldn’t be this difficult. I followed the directions.”

“I know you did.” Terrence came towards her and kissed her gently. “There’s an innate thing to baking. It’s not just about following the directions. It’s sort of a feeling.”

“So you can teach me this like you taught me,” Asher blew out a breath to get her hair that had escaped out of her eyes. “Uno.”

“You know I only think of that when it involves any of my friends or siblings. “Terrence eyes twinkled.

“I know you don’t like to think of them having sex.” Asher rolled her eyes.

“Uno. The word is Uno.” Terrence teased.

“You and your family and friends are so weird.” Asher chuckled. “They all get so uptight, demure or duck the conversation when sex is involved.”

“That might be my fault.” Terrence smiled sheepishly.

“I know. Why do you think I mess with them and ask all the questions? I like seeing them squirm.” Asher winked.

Terrence chuckled and kissed her again before looking her in the eyes. “You got this.” Terrence looked around at the flour strewn all over-the-counter. “Although I wonder why you didn’t start with something easy like a cake. “

“You like pie. The noise you made when you had that pie I wanted to give you that. Well outside the bedroom.” Asher blew out another breath. “Whoever thought making crust would be so hard?”

“Anyone who has made pie. Crust is one of those things many bakers struggle with at first.” Terrence took her flour covered hands in his and squeezed them gently. “That’s why some don’t even make crust and just use the store-bought.”

“But… wait there’s store-bought crust.” Asher cried then shook her head. “No. I want to make it or not at all. Show me.”

“Sure. You go clean your hands. Then get the ingredients so we can start over.” Terrence gently turned her to the sink. “I’ll just clean this up while you do that.”

Asher went to the sink and started cleaning her hands.

“Note to self don’t ever eat tart around Asher.” Terrence muttered. “I could only imagine trying to teach her to make tart. There’s not enough alcohol in the world.”

Asher finished washing her hands then pulled out her cell. She typed a quick note then waited for the reply. She smiled and started to bounce.

“After you show me how to make pie we’re going to make tart. It’s from where your home originally was.” Asher turned to Terrance.

The look of horror on his face made her laugh. She ran to him and hugged him.

“Pie. Then tart. And somebody mentioned bread. There are all sorts of bread to be made. They mentioned Dumb Bread that’s also where you are originally from.” Asher bounced as she held him.

She ignored as he got stiffer and stiffer. Terrence groaned loud and long. She ignored that to. She was so getting into this baking thing.

“Who the heck have you been texting?” Terrence blew out a deep breath. “It’ll be fine. I’ll find something else to distract you.”

“Really. You really think so.” Asher wiggled her eyebrows.

Terrence stared at her and sighed. “I’m so doomed.”

“Yep. This is a great result having a baking effect. I love how the things you do can affect me. “Asher kissed him on the chin. Then turned to gather the ingredients for the pie crust.

“The baking effect.” Terrence snorted. “That’s one way to think of it.”

Asher snickered. She knew no matter what he said or how he acted he’d enjoy teaching her something new. Just like before and many times to come. She was going to enjoy their journeys in the baking effect.

“Hey maybe we can pull in others to do this to.” Asher bounced a few times. “Maybe they’d be more forthcoming to discuss about baking.”

“So you’d give up your teasing them about sex?” Terrence chuckled. “Why don’t I believe that?”
