“You know whenever I see that look it brings back such fond memories.” Rueben strode into the room.

“What look?” Devlin watched him suspiciously.

“Like you’re about to rain fire and brimstone down on someone. And they aren’t gonna know what hit them.” He paused and stared at her lips. “I like that look by the way.”

“Which you told me the first time we met.” Devlin rolled her eyes. “And like then you have a look in your eyes too.” She stared at him.

“What look?”

“Like you’re about to get into some mischief,” She paused. “I don’t have time for that.”

“Mischief does a body good,” he paused then said softly, “Really good.”

“Same thing you told me when we first met.” Devlin chuckled. “I’m not going to get pulled into whatever mischief you are planning. I’m enfolded in my favorite blanket while drinking a good shot of bourbon.” She lifted her glass. “I’m enjoying the sensation of warmth followed by a burn. So I’m not going anywhere.”

“No need to go anywhere. I know how much of a sucker you are for comfort.” Reuben came closer. “Is there potentially a place for me with you under that blanket?”

“Maybe.” Devlin teased.

She held up the blanket. He settled under it with her. Reuben settled beside her and sighed.

“This is nice.” Reuben grabbed the remote from next to her.

“Wait I’m watching that.” Devlin narrowed her eyes. “You’re making me rethink my sharing my blanket with you.”

“You can watch this anytime.” He kissed her on the cheek. “You’re going to like this.”

He set up what he was looking for then sat back and waited.

“White Palace.” Devlin snuggled into him and kissed him on the chin. “You know what makes me happy. One of my favorite movies and snuggling with you.”

“I do.” He kissed her on her forehead. “Although I’m curious about what made you have the look in your eyes when I came in. I’m going to leave it alone for now.”

“Yeah. Let me unwind and I’ll fill you in later.” Devlin leaned into him.

“Unwinding unlocked.” Reuben smiled.

“They are just screwing with me.” Sinclair glared with her hands on her hips.

“Why are you being mean to the wall? What has the wall ever done to you?” Baldwin teased from behind her.

“Mister MD.” Sinclair turned to face him.

As usual when she saw him her heart started to race, palms itched to grab him and pull him close. The man made her want in the best of ways. Even when she was as irritated as she was now.

“I know that look on your face.” Baldwin came towards her. “Who’s messing with you? Who do I need to have a stern talking to?”

“I know you’re teasing me but I don’t care.” Sinclair gestured to the wall behind her. “They said pick one you like. They are all white.”

“This is sounding eerily familiar.” Baldwin stood beside her and slid his arm around her waist. “This is déjà from how we met.”

“I didn’t know at the time that meeting you would change my life for the better.” Sinclair smiled.

“You’re trying to butter me up instead of demanding I help. Like you did that day in the hardware store.” Baldwin squeezed her gently. “But since I’m all in with you I’m going to help you.”

Sinclair sagged relieved. “They are screwing with me like they did that day.”

“No one should send you to a hardware store unsupervised. Especially to pick out paint.” Baldwin squeezed her again then turned and walked away.

“Exactly. Hey you said you’d be helping me. Where are you going?” Sinclair stared after him.

“Pick a white one.” Baldwin snickered.

He paused in the doorway and looked over his shoulder.

“Ohhhh…you set this up.” She accused and shook her fist at him. “Why would you want to mess with me like this?”

“You get a vein that pops just right there in your forehead.” Baldwin pointed. “And you’re sexy when you’re annoyed. Makes me a hot.”

“Even through I’m annoyed at you for this paint torture. I somehow still like you. But if you do it again that can change.” Sinclair warned.

“You love me.” Baldwin sing-songed. “And that’s not going to change. The forever rule.”

“What the heck is that?” Sinclair walked towards him.

“You kissed, licked, so many things and made me yours. Now I’m yours forever.”

Baldwin smirked. “The forever rule is in effect.”

“I like that. So since you kissed, licked, so many things and made me yours. That means I’m also yours forever.“ She hugged him. “That means when people try to make me go to a hardware store or chose paint when they all look alike. You’re going to be the one who does it.”

“That’s not what I meant. I’m afraid of dealing with your family when it comes to fixing things up. They get kinda intense.” Baldwin protested.

“The forever rule.” Sinclair snickered. “I’m so liking the rule and will use it to my advantage often.”

“I’m rethinking this rule.”

“Too late.” Sinclair laughed and walked out the door.

“What are you doing in here? I thought we were meeting in the living room.” Zachary spoke from the kitchen doorway.

“Go ahead.” She shooed him away. “I’ll be there in a moment.”

Zachary retreated. Tyler continued what she was doing. Soon she held the cups and headed to join him. She paused in the doorway. Zachary glanced at her and smiled. Tyler walked over and set the mugs on the center table before sitting beside him. She loved when he leaned in and kissed her gently.

“Tea love.” Zachary said. “How’d you know that’s what I wanted?”

“Might have been the various new teas you bought home the other day.” Tyler laughed. “I swear you’ve become a worst tea hoarder than me. It’s like a treasure hunt for tea. One I love and enjoy.”

“I’m learning from the best.” Zachary nodded. “And I have some more I have my eye on here in Zander Oaks at that place we love to go to. Also in a few other cities from the online stores they have. I might have mentioned my needing some tea love to others. So I’ve been getting a lot of suggestions.”

“I’ve created a Tea Monster.” Tyler rubbed her hand along his arm.

“Yep and proud of it.” Zachary said smugly. “Being with you has opened many things for me. Like oatmeal, bread, sewing, movies, games, books, music and so many other things.”

“Hmmm…someone should come up with a group or something for those things. That way people with those interests can exchange things about it. There could be suggestions, recipes, and so on. Like that anniversary one that is to one up each other thing.”

“Oh yeah…I need to check that out.” Zachary nodded. “And a group with that would be good. Heck I’m all in for tea love. Also any of the others.” He leaned forward and picked up the cups.

Tyler accepted her tea. Zachary tapped cups with her.

“Let’s see if you can figure out which tea is it.” Tyler smirked.

She also loved this part of their tea love. The first taste of a new tea. Hell even the taste of a favorite tea. To be honest she loved tea in general.

“Come back to me. Come back from the tea love memory lane.” Zachary said in a spooky voice.

“I was lost there for a minute.” Tyler said sheepishly. “Or more. But it was fabulous. Let’s get to our tea love.”

“Tea love.” Zachary echoed.

They sipped the tea and both moaned. Tyler leaned against him enjoying being with him and their tea love.

Jonas spotted Lexi across the yard. He hurried to catch up with her. As he closed in he spotted something that gave him what could be bad idea. But he went with it. He picked up the item then closed in on his target. He waved the lariat over his head, then let it fly. It lassoed its target.

“Hey! Wh—”

Jonas pulled hard before Lexi could finish his sentence. Lexi tumbled back and landed on her ass.

She groaned before cursing. “Damn it.”

Running to her, he straddled her, then grabbed her hands, quickly tying her up. “Got you! I’m keeping you.”

“You’re such a doofus. A sentimental one but still a doofus.” She chuckled. “Someone was feeling nostalgic.”

He smiled fondly. Recalling when she had did something similar to him. Yeah he was feeling a little sentimental. He kissed her before leaning back.

“Every day I love having been kept by you.” He smoothed strands of her long hair that had escaped her high ponytail away from her face.

He stood and lifted her to her feet. Taking her bound hands he led her towards their home. She was his home and he had almost walked away from her that day. Lexi had lassoed him and said she’d keep him. She kept her word. She’d made his life so much richer and fuller than it ever was.

“I’m glad to hear that. Don’t you think you should release me now?” Lexi tugged on the ropes he held.

He grinned. “Nah… I have some plans before that will happen.” He tugged back. “Hey let’s do some me chasing you around our rocking chair. I plan to be doing that even when we’re eighty.”

“Awww…you are using similar words from when you realized we were meant to be together.” Lexi laughed. “You sexy man.” She thought then said what she had said them. “And I might let you catch me.”

He said the words he had said in the past. “It was faith.”

“What was faith?” She echoed her words she’d said in the past.

Jonas recalled his words and said them to her now and meant every one. “From the minute I saw you, I knew my life was about to change. For a long time I convinced myself it was a change for the ranch but I was wrong. It was only a matter of time before I made you mine. I’m going to love you, orneriness and all, for the rest of my life. I want to be taken by you everyday of our lives.”

“Hmmmm… you keep me guessing so I might be just a little tempted.” Lexi jerked the rope then pulled him off balance and kissed him.

Jonas sank into their kiss losing himself.

Lexi pulled away and patted him on the chest. “I’m keeping you. Come along.”

Jonas lifted his hands and saw she was free and she’d tied him up. He hadn’t even realized she had done it.

“I forgot for a moment the disreputable things you brother’s have taught you.” He lifted his tied hands. “Like undoing ropes and then using them on others.”

Lexi chuckled and pulled him along behind her. He went willingly. He would follow her anywhere.

Fresh air filled Joanna’s lungs as she breathed in. As she ran, she enjoyed the trail around her. Since it was so early there wasn’t anyone around just as she liked it. She turned the corner of the trail and hit into someone. The man caught her in strong arms as she stumbled.

“We really need to stop meeting like this.”” Joanna stared into familiar light hazel eyes.

“Why? I like when you are in my arms.” Declan’s deep bassy voice was compelling as he looked.

She studied that chiseled face that was captivating—all sexy bad boy. As usual his dark brown hair was teased into slight spiked peak. Declan smiled that roguish grin of his.

“I thought you were working late.”

“We wrapped up early.” He pulled her into his body.

He leaned in and she lifted her head and met him. They kissed softly and gently before pulling back.

“I’ve missed you on our morning runs.” She said softly.

Declan had been working late for the last few weeks on a case. “Me too.” He smiled. “I’ll be coming on all morning runs at least for now.”

“You wrapped the case.”

“Yes.” He hugged her then released her. “Let’s have our run and I’ll tell you all about it.”

“Ok.” She waited until he was by her side then they started running together.

Thoughts of their first meeting filled her. She’d been in the bad place after a shooting and was running to clear her head before her return to duty. As they had just now, they had bumped into each other. Then Declan had invited himself along to join her in her run. The sneaky man had gotten past her guard so easily. She never thought that would’ve led to the man who ran beside her. The one she loved, and he loved her in return. The board had very demanding careers, but they made it work. Just like the morning runs which was something they did together. Sometimes her friend and partner and his friend and partner would join them.

“You’re thinking too hard. Our meeting that day was what led us to being here today.” Declan paused. “It’s amazing how time can pass so quickly. How things can change in an instant. “

Joanna nodded. “Yes. Life changes. Things happen. But in the end, it’s all about what you do when they do.” She glanced at Declan. “I’m glad you were sneaky to get me to know you. Or we wouldn’t be here today.”

“Hey, I resemble that remark.” Declan laughed then sobered. “I’m grateful that you let me in.”

“Me too.” She winked. “Now come on my sneaky runner.”

Declan laughed. “You have such a way with sweet words.”

Joanna ran faster. “Catch me if you can sneaky runner.”

She heard him behind her and knew for the rest of their lives he’d be with her. He was her sneaky runner.

Today’s Page Brief features characters from If You Were Mine, Zander Oaks, Book #3. Enjoy!

From time to time there’s multi-part Page Brief’s that go together. I think of it as a Page Brief Serial and I name them. The below Page Brief Serial Irresistible Effect features the books at the time I wrote these Page Brief’s that were available in my Zander Oaks series. Eventually when books are released in the Zander Oaks series an Page Brief might be written and if it is it will be added to the Irresistible Effect Page Brief Serial. So this Page Brief Serial is a continuous one (at my discretion/time permits).

Seneca glanced around as she rode up on her horse. She stopped and got off the horse holding the reins in her hand. She glanced at her watch at the time and wondered if she was mistaken.

“I thought Carlton had told me to meet him here at 10.” Hearing a noise, she headed towards it.

Before she could reach where it came from Carlton rode through the trees into the clearing. He smiled when he saw her. Seneca put her hand on her belly. No matter how long they had been together she still couldn’t get over the effect seeing him and knowing he was hers. He got off his horse and holding the reins he walked towards her. His loose-limbed gait made her want to just grab him and kiss him silly. In the next moment she realized she could. All the years of her holding back sometimes was her default. When he was before her, she reached out and he met her. She pulled him close, and he smoothed his hands over her back down her waist then cupped her but. Carlton drew her close and she met him as he kissed her. It was possessive, tender and unraveled her as it usually did.

He pulled back and looked into her eyes. “We’ve been so busy. Your invitation to come here was a good idea.”

Seneca frowned. “You invited me to come here.”

“But Clarice…” Carlton trailed off.

“Set us up.” Seneca shook her head. “She told me you said to meet you here at this time.”

“And she told me you said to meet you here at this time.” Carlton shook his head also. “That child.”

“Yeah. Knowing her she wanted us to realize how busy we’ve been and not spending time together.” Seneca chuckled. “Once again she’s outsmarted us.”

At the sound of someone approaching on horseback she turned and so did Carlton. When the man came closer followed by the other man Seneca narrowed her eyes. Carlton took the reins of her horse and took his and hers towards the trees. He rejoined her just as the riders stopped close to them. She glared at them.

“I should’ve known you two had something to do with this.” She said.

“We’re innocent.” Turner chuckled. “Your daughter didn’t need any help planning this.”

“And she asked…demanded…” Jaxx coughed. “we bring this to you.”

He grabbed the bag that was on the back of his saddle. Carlton stepped forward and accepted the item.

“Have fun you two.” Turner waved.

Both men turned and headed back the way they came.

“How much do you want to bet they aren’t going directly to the ranch?” Seneca said.

“That’s a sucker bet.” Carlton opened the cooler bag. “Seems like our kid decided we needed to have a picnic. And for how much food and other things she has in her she doesn’t want us to come back for the rest of the day.”

“That child.” Seneca laughed.

Clarice was too smart for their good. Although it was because of her that she and her dad Carlton had gotten together. Carlton walked towards the lake and Seneca followed. He pulled out a blanket from the back and set it down. She helped him unfold it then they settled it under the shade of a tree. Seneca sat down and Carlton sat near her. She reached for the bag, but he put his hand over hers.

“I love coming to this place.” He pulled her close to him. “It’s so peaceful and beautiful. It fills my soul like you do.” He turned his head and looked at her. “I love you, Seneca.”

As it did every time, he said those words her heart raced. “I love you, Carlton.” She smirked. “Although at first I was slow on getting that you love me I know it now.”

Carlton grunted a small smile on his face. “Communication.”

She nodded. That was the one thing they had lacked, and they had worked hard to overcome it. There were still moments that they didn’t fully express what they meant but they were getting better at it every day.

“So, what should we do with our unexpected free day?” Carlton smile was wicked.

She didn’t need him to say what he had in mind. “How about we work on some communication?”

“Hmmm…some non-verbal communication.” Carlton leaned closer. “My favorite kind of communication.”

Seneca slid her fingers into his hair and pulled him to her. She kissed him deeply. They had the entire day to enjoy. She couldn’t think of a better way to spend their unexpected free day—with each other.
