Snapshot ~ Protective Maneuvers Series

There are many ways I think of words. One is as a snapshot which forms a picture in your mind of what is on the page. With each of my series I’m sharing this with you…snapshot.

Snapshot ~ Beyond the Unexpected

There are many ways I think of words. One is as a snapshot which forms a picture in your mind of what is on the page. With each of my books I’m sharing this with you…snapshot.

Today’s Page Brief features characters from Beyond the Unexpected, Protective Maneuvers Book #1. Enjoy!

From time to time there’s multi-part Page Brief’s that go together. I think of it as a Page Brief Serial and I name them. The below Page Brief Serial Simply with You features the books at the time I wrote these Page Brief’s that were available in my Protective Maneuvers series. Eventually when books are released in the Protective Maneuvers series an Page Brief might be written and if it is it will be added to the Simply with You Page Brief Serial. So this Page Brief Serial is a continuous one (at my discretion/time permits).

Simply with You is a multi-part Page Brief Serial and best read in order for the most enjoyment. They are usually in order of the Protective Maneuvers series for which they are written about (unless otherwise noted).

Marcus stepped inside the house. Rayne’s vehicle wasn’t in the driveway. He resisted the urge to dance. Since she wasn’t home he wasn’t going to feel too guilty he wasn’t sharing something they both loved. He slid off his shoes then held onto the bag and went to the living room. Marcus sat on the couch placing the bag next to him. He pulled out the first item.

“All mine.” Marcus took out the first piece and took a bite.

He moaned as the decant taste filled his mouth.

“What are you eating?” Rayne asked.

Marcus eyes widened and he swallowed. “Nothing.” He stuffed the items back in the bag and hid it using his body between where he sat and the arm of the couch.

“So you’re making those obscene noises for nothing.” Rayne said as she came around the couch.

I’m not going to feel guilty for not sharing. It’s every man or woman for themselves. Marcus tried to not let her silence and gaze get to him. He thought of what he had. Rayne continued to watch him silently.

“Fine.” Marcus sighed then pulled out the bag then the first item.

Rayne glanced at what he held then at him. “Really?” She shook her head. “And to think I shared with you when I had those almond candies.”

“You weren’t home. At least I thought you weren’t.” Marcus frowned. “Where is your car?”

“I’m having some maintenance done on it.” Rayne sat beside him. “I bet you were glad I supposedly wasn’t home.”

Marcus wasn’t admitting that. “Taste this.” He took out a piece and held it to her lips.

Rayne took a bite then moaned. “Toasted Coconut Marshmallows.” She whimpered. “Where did you get these?”

“I went to check on the guys who were working that sort of street fair for some of the local businesses.” Marcus said. “One of the businesses is newly opened. They make a lot of interesting things including these beauties.” He fed her more.

She took another bite and moaned again before speaking. “You better have the address.”

“They make custom made things.” Marcus whispered. “You can choose what you want.”

“Why are you whispering?” Rayne said in the same tone.

“It deserves reverence and awe.” Marcus continued to whisper.

“I can agree to that.” Rayne nodded. “And someone wasn’t going to share these.”

“I was going to sample it for us.” Marcus protested. “Make sure it is up to our standards. Then if they were take you to the shop.”

“Yeah…I believe that.” Rayne snorted. “My body is really happy right now so I’m going to pretend I believe you. Give me some more.”

Marcus gave her more. Rayne made noises of pleasure as she ate. Marcus waited until she finished that piece. He pulled out another bag then held it before taking out a piece and offering it to her. Rayne looked at him but took a bite.

Her eyes widened then. “Toasted Caramel Coconut Marshmallows.”

She abruptly stood and pulled him up. Rayne dragged him behind her. Marcus went willingly.

“My car is not here. You’re driving.” Rayne said. “Put on your shoes.”

“Of course.” Marcus smirked as he put on his shoes. “Standards Met.”

“So met. Surpassed met.” Rayne said. “Sharing is a good thing.”

“Yep.” Marcus nodded. “Things are better with you.”

He let her pull him out the door.

Rayne held very still as she planned out her strategy. He was going down. She didn’t care that he did a similar thing for a living. On this field it was fair play. And they had a reward that was at stake. She was going to win that reward. No way was she going to let him beat her. The damn infuriating man would rub it in.

Slowly she walked forward and lifted her weapon. A slight sound made her look up. She met smokey gray eyes surrounded by dark-blond curly lashes. He studied her. Rayne studied him in return. His shaggy, shoulder-length hair with various shades of brown, ranging from light blond to auburn, reminded her of a tabby cat. A light sheen of sweat coated his sun-kissed, craggy face. His broad forehead was furrowed. His nose, which looked as if it had been broken, flared, and full lips were pulled into a straight line. His entire countenance gave off the feel of coiled strength and a sense of danger.

He pulled the trigger. She ducked and rolled barely escaping the paint.

“Damn it.” She scuttled behind the tire for cover. “Nice try, chief deputy.” She snickered. “You might be second-in-command of the Trescott Cove Police Force but that means nothing here. You are going down.” She held her paintball gun and ran ducking behind cover.

“You’re going to lose, my lady.” Marcus called out cheerfully.

“You’re just saying that to make me get mushy.” Rayne growled. “There is no mushy in paintball. “

“Damn right.” The echoes of agreements of the various people involved in the game sounded from the places people hid. Rayne laughed. They were split into teams and nobody wanted to lose. They were all highly competitive people. Some who like herself wasn’t in some sort of law enforcement or security or knew anything about weapons were at a disadvantage. But that was fine all it would take was getting that shot. She was determined even if she lost the game to get Marcus. To outlast Marcus. She knew if she didn’t he brag and enjoy it way too much.

She inhaled and readied herself. Rayne smiled she had this.

“Hey my lady.” Marcus stated from above her. “You know it’s a bad idea to stay in one place and think too much.”

He shot her as she shot him.

“Damn it.” Rayne scowled. “We shot each other the same time.”

“A tie.” Marcus hissed. “No bragging rights and no reward we had planned.”

“No noooo.” Rayne cried then pouted. “I was so looking forward to it.”

“Knowing these folks were playing with will do it again. So we’ll hold a reward for another time.” Marcus came down off the wall and put his arm around her shoulder. “While we wait for the rest them so we can go out and eat we can find someplace private. Where we can enjoy another kind of reward.”

“Oohhh…Mister Carmichael I love the sound of that.” She snuggled into him.

“No fraternization with the enemy.” The echoes of various people involved in the game sounded from the places people hid.

They laughed and gave them the finger as they walked off the field. Rayne knowing her friends and family they were going to be a while. Although she hadn’t won she was going to enjoy the rewards of their fair play.

Page Notes ~ Beyond the Unexpected

Today’s Page Notes is a little taste from Beyond the Unexpected, Protective Maneuvers, Book #1. Enjoy.

Steps came to him, and a hand touched his back. Marcus stilled a shudder. He prayed for control not to kiss her.

“We have a book to finish,” she said.

He glanced at her as she held up his reader.

“I wondered where you put it. Am I going to get it back anytime soon?” He quirked a brow.

“I’ll think about it.” Rayne smirked.

Marcus chuckled. Rayne gestured for him to get comfortable on the window seat. He sat on the plush cushion.

“Lean back,” Rayne said.

He did and spread his thighs. Rayne joined him, settling between his legs, her back against his chest. Marcus breathed in the scent of her. Almonds and peaches filled his senses. Rayne turned on the reader and picked up where she had left off. Absently, he listened to her. They were so comfortable with each other. The easy familiarity was like nothing he had ever had with another woman, even those who he had slept with or been in a relationship. Yet, here he was with a woman in his arms he hadn’t even kissed. And it felt as if they had been together forever and had gotten to know each other.

Stop being fanciful. Solve what’s going on with Rayne. Then you can possibly think of pursuing this chemistry.

Marcus glanced at her in his arms. He already knew once they tracked down who was trying to kill her, he would take steps to make her his. Rayne shifted her pert ass, pressing against his member. His cock went rock hard. She paused briefly, then continued. Marcus inhaled deeply, the scent of her making him want her. Will power.

Will power, Marcus. You can do this.
