Page Brief ~ A great end to the day

Today’s Page Brief features characters from Best Laid Plans, Rowan, Book #3. Enjoy!

From time to time there’s multi-part Page Brief’s that go together. I think of it as a Page Brief Serial and I name them. The below Page Brief Serial Chosen by You features the books at the time I wrote these Page Brief’s that were available in my Rowan series. Eventually when books are released in the Rowan series an Page Brief might be written and if it is it will be added to the Chosen by You Page Brief Serial. So this Page Brief Serial is a continuous one (at my discretion/time permits).

Garrett walked into the house and closed the door. He rolled his shoulders. It’d been a long day and he was so happy to be home. He put his keys on the entryway table before heading towards the noise coming from the living room. In the doorway he paused and enjoyed watching Maura who was unaware he was there.

“What a — “

He didn’t pay attention to the words she was singing. Garrett was more caught by her dancing. She moved her hips in a sensuous movement as she sang. He walked towards her. Maura was so into the music she didn’t hear him. She turned then stilled a moment before continuing to dance.

“I love you to, DD.” Garret smiled.

“Don’t call me Diva Duo.” Maura glared at his cat who sat on back of couch staring at them. “Why can’t she be Diva Duo?”

“She was the original Diva and after meeting you you’re my other Diva.” He stopped before her and moved along.

She moved into him. Garret pulled her flush against him. They moved together. She kissed him gently.

“Fine.” Maura said grudgingly. “I’m maybe starting to get used to it.”

“You say that every time you protest about being my DD.” He nuzzled into the side of her neck.

“I love you, Garret.” Maura sighed.

She pressed against him. He held her as they danced. Maura started singing. He closed his eyes and listened as he held her. After a long day this was a great end to the day.

Halle lifted her glass and hid her smile.

“I can’t believe I’m letting you torture me like this.” Kariati grumbled.

“Awww…my Sigrum demon can handle this.” She said softly and stifled her chuckle.
Kariati sighed. “Why do they like to hear themselves talk at these things?”

“To torture all of us who isn’t here willingly or for an award.” Chris – her friend replied.

Kathryn – Chris’s wife who was also a friend and her business partner – didn’t appreciate his words or dry tone. “How many times have I had to sit through some boring thing for you?”

Chris answered immediately. “You are a goddess who makes my life so fulfilled.”

“You’re full of it.” Kathryn snorted then coughed playfully. “So much shit. So much shit.”

“Now, now we shouldn’t be talking about bowel movements in front of Kariati. We don’t want to scare him away.” Chris slid his arm over his wife’s shoulder.
“Hey what about me?” Halle glared at them.

“Hush you. You’re used to us.” Kathryn said. “He’s not. We want him to like us.” She smiled widely. “Think we are normal. Normal.” She smacked Chris on his chest. “Normal. Act normal.”

Chris smiled widely too.

Halle turned to Kariati. The contemplative look on his face made her say quickly through their telepathic link.

“They are human. Nothing else. They are just joking.”

“Ahhh… I wondered.” Kariati snorted. “Human humor is…interesting to decipher.” He paused. “They are some of your closest friends. When you feel is right, we can tell them about me and us.”

Shocked, she breathed out. “Really?”

“Yes. If you trust them I do too, Burning Wife.” His words were a caress.

She shivered and swallowed, lowering her glass shakily to the table. Halle looked at the couple across the table. They were still grinning and snuggled up with each other. She remembered all the times she had spent time with them and longed for what they had. Hell, the first time she met her Burning Husband she had seen a couple and had that same longing for what they had. Now she had that too.

“They are weird but mine.” Halle winked at her friends.

She would eventually share with them about the man who had her love. Although she knew Kariati offering to share what he was was a big deal she also figured if what they revealed was too much for her friends there were ways to protect them. Numerous ways to remove the knowledge and wipe it out even if it was ever spoken to someone who didn’t know there were other beings in this world.

“I like them.” Kariati fluttered his thick curly lashes surrounding his blue-green eyes, ringed with hazel playfully. “Can we keep them? They are so normal.”

They all laughed. Although his eyes were unique Halle was surprised many hadn’t commented. Not even her friends. Then again with the way people changed how they looked people were used to the different and knew better than to ask. The most anyone had done was compliment him on how he looked. And Kariati was gorgeous – a mix of so handsome you wanted him but with a bad-boy edge than made you wonder if that was a good idea. She knew it was. It so much was.

“Although I’m being tortured with this long event for you and Kathryn to get your award, I’m proud of you.” Kariati smiled. “My Burning Wife.” He added in her thoughts.

That was something else she would need to share with her friends. They were married in the way of Kariati’s people. Tied in ways that went beyond a human marriage.

“Thanks.” She snuggled into him.

“At least they will be serving dinner soon.” Kariati said.

Halle laughed and so did the others. Kariati narrowed his eyes then sighed loudly and long.

“Sucky food usually.” Chris rolled his eyes. “But we can go out after and get some real food.”

Kariati glanced at her then back to her friends. “I have the perfect place – Club Immortality.”

She looked at him surprised.

“Might as well start getting them used to things.” He said in her thoughts. “They won’t see anything the Club doesn’t think they are ready for. It’ll be a good gauge on when to tell them.”

She nodded. They sat and talked while they waited for the awards. As the night progressed Halle was proud of how Kariati and her friends got along. He also charmed those she did business with. Kariati didn’t like to socialize but he did it for her. She kissed his cheek. He looked at her and winked.

Finally, as the night wrapped up Halle walked beside him as he led them out. Chis and Kathryn ambled behind them.

“How was it?” She snuggled into him.

“What?”

“The foray into the unknown. This is outside what you are used too.” Halle studied him.
Kariati shrugged. “It is. But for you I did this.” He chuckled. “It wasn’t so bad. I did have a few moments I really wanted to zap someone.”

She laughed. She had seen him almost do it.

“I resisted.” Kariati stopped them just outside. “There will be many more of these. These foray into the unknown and I look forward to experiencing them with you by my side.” He smiled. “I have this thing I need to go too in a few weeks.”

“Oh god, please tell me it’s not like this.” She gestured to where they had exited.

Kariati laughed and led her to where their car was parked. Halle shook her head. She’d do the same as he did for her – dive into these forays into the unknown. They would do it together.

Fresh air filled Joanna’s lungs as she breathed in. As she ran, she enjoyed the trail around her. Since it was so early there wasn’t anyone around just as she liked it. She turned the corner of the trail and hit into someone. The man caught her in strong arms as she stumbled.

“We really need to stop meeting like this.”” Joanna stared into familiar light hazel eyes.

“Why? I like when you are in my arms.” Declan’s deep bassy voice was compelling as he looked.

She studied that chiseled face that was captivating—all sexy bad boy. As usual his dark brown hair was teased into slight spiked peak. Declan smiled that roguish grin of his.

“I thought you were working late.”

“We wrapped up early.” He pulled her into his body.

He leaned in and she lifted her head and met him. They kissed softly and gently before pulling back.

“I’ve missed you on our morning runs.” She said softly.

Declan had been working late for the last few weeks on a case. “Me too.” He smiled. “I’ll be coming on all morning runs at least for now.”

“You wrapped the case.”

“Yes.” He hugged her then released her. “Let’s have our run and I’ll tell you all about it.”

“Ok.” She waited until he was by her side then they started running together.

Thoughts of their first meeting filled her. She’d been in the bad place after a shooting and was running to clear her head before her return to duty. As they had just now, they had bumped into each other. Then Declan had invited himself along to join her in her run. The sneaky man had gotten past her guard so easily. She never thought that would’ve led to the man who ran beside her. The one she loved, and he loved her in return. The board had very demanding careers, but they made it work. Just like the morning runs which was something they did together. Sometimes her friend and partner and his friend and partner would join them.

“You’re thinking too hard. Our meeting that day was what led us to being here today.” Declan paused. “It’s amazing how time can pass so quickly. How things can change in an instant. “

Joanna nodded. “Yes. Life changes. Things happen. But in the end, it’s all about what you do when they do.” She glanced at Declan. “I’m glad you were sneaky to get me to know you. Or we wouldn’t be here today.”

“Hey, I resemble that remark.” Declan laughed then sobered. “I’m grateful that you let me in.”

“Me too.” She winked. “Now come on my sneaky runner.”

Declan laughed. “You have such a way with sweet words.”

Joanna ran faster. “Catch me if you can sneaky runner.”

She heard him behind her and knew for the rest of their lives he’d be with her. He was her sneaky runner.

“I still don’t get why people lose all sense at a wedding.” Nia Hudson moved deeper into the alcove away from the madness.

“And I’ll say it again like I did when we first meet—makes them want to grab onto their singlehood and appreciate it as much as they can. Personally, I like weddings,” a deep, masculine voice said from her right.

Unlike the first time they met Nia appreciated the man standing beside her. Although he was going to owe her for attending this wedding with him.

“You look ravishing.” Darius lifted her hand and kissed her knuckles.

“Don’t think that’ll get you out of owing me for coming.” She kissed the back of his knuckles.

“I’m not trying to get out of owing you.” He cupped her cheek and ran his finger down the side. “You’ve had a busy day.”

“Yeah, we caught a new case.”

“You know you didn’t have to leave work to come here.”

Nia leaned against him. “I didn’t. We didn’t have anything pressing we could go on. We’re waiting for forensics.” She glanced at her watch. “So, I might have to cut out early.”

“If you do that’s fine.” He studied her. “I’d rather be spending time alone.”

“Me too.” She sighed, “but I know you need to be here for your friend.” She rolled her shoulders. “Let’s go and socialize.”

He held her hand as they exited the alcove. Nia glanced at the partying guests at the wedding reception. The wedding had been a very beautiful. Now people were letting loose. Suddenly the room changed. She stopped and Darius stopped with her.

“Why did you bring us home?” She smiled as she took in their haven they had created.

“We’ve done the social niceties. Now we can spend some time together before you might maybe have to leave for work.” Darius led her to the couch.

“You’re having powers comes in mighty handy.”

“Being a Garlven is a beautiful thing.” He chuckled. “Although no one has said it was handy to me before.”

Nia sat and he sat beside her. “My very own gargoyle.” She snuggled into him.

“Garlven.” He corrected.

“I know. You and the others get this pissy tone when anyone who knows about you calls you a gargoyle. Hell, when anyone says the word in your presence I can see you all trying not to correct them since they don’t know about you.” Nia laughed.

“It’s…difficult.” Darius scowled. “Do you know Mia has convinced Remy to have a family movie night?”

“Okay. When?” Nia didn’t see what was wrong with that.

“She plans to find any movie that has gargoyles in them for us to watch.” Darius sighed. “Wait until she finds out there are other beings that also exist here at the hotel and the world. I bet she will be looking for movies that have them in it to.”

Nia bit her lip. She wasn’t naïve to take that bet. Although she was curious about his other being she didn’t ask knowing it would lead to a long conversation she was too tired to have.

Darius lifted an eyebrow. “You don’t look very surprised about this movie night plan.”

“What happened was…” Nia rubbed her hand along the back of her neck. “A bunch of us the other day were talking about how we all loved the gargoyle cartoons. We had a crush on you know whose voice.”

“Thank you for not calling his name.” Darius rolled his eyes. “Remy is kindof sensitive about him since Mia has such a crush on him.”

“Remy knows he’s fictional. And Mia loves him.” Nia pointed out.

Darius nodded. “I know. But when she finally convinced him to watch the cartoons with her how she reacted made him a little annoyed.”

“She was joking.” Nia recalled what happened after.

Remy had flown all Mia’s copies of the cartoons somewhere and to this day he hadn’t returned them. Mia thought it was hilarious that Remy was so perturbed about her crush.

“Rational Remy knows that. Irrational Remy there’s no reasoning with.”

“I’m so going to call him that when he’s acting irrationally.” Nia laughed. “I’m glad you don’t have an irrational side.”

“Sure.” Darius glanced away.

“Darius?” She narrowed her eyes. “What did you do?”

He shrugged not answering. Nia wasn’t in the mood to get him to talk. She decided to wait him out.

“Let’s relax and watch a movie.” Nia smiled. “My favorite movies.”

“Ummm….let’s watch something else.”

Nia was surprised he wasn’t willing to watch the movies. He seemed to have enjoyed them when they watched earlier this week. She glanced towards the shelf her movies were on then back at him.

“Where’s my transformer movies?”

“I’m tired. Off to bed for me.” Darius yawned widely then rose and walked away rapidly.

“Darius.” Nia rose and went after him.

He disappeared. She stopped and put her hands on her hips.

“Darius don’t you pull the disappearing on me.” Nia glanced around the empty area around her. “I know you’re there. What did you do my movies?”

“It wasn’t me.” Darius slid his arms around her pulling her against his chest. She felt his power along her skin as he reappeared. “It was Irrational Darius. That
bastard is always trying to get me in trouble.”

“I would point out that you are one and the same.” Nia turned in his arms. “But I’m going to resist. You better put my movies back where you found them.”

Darius opened his mouth. She held up her hand. He closed his mouth.

“Just because I have a voice crush on…”

“Don’t say his name.” Darius scowled. “Ever.”

“I love you you dumbass.” She smacked him gently upside the head. “You are being ridiculous. So’s Remy.”

Darius looked contemplative then he nodded. “It’s all Remy’s fault.”

“This I can’t wait to hear.”

“His irrationalness is catching.” Darius smiled.

Nia snorted then rolled her eyes. “Whatever. Movies back where they belong.” She pulled out of his arms and walked towards their bedroom.

“You could be like Mia and accept they are gone.” Darius called.

“You really don’t understand women.” Nia chuckled. “Mia isn’t accepting they are gone. She’d biding her time and when Remy realizes she took something of his he’ll wise up. She won’t return it until he returns her stuff.” She glanced back. “I’m saving us the time.”

Darius walked up to her. “What did she take?” He stopped by her side. “Wait…Remy didn’t say he was m —“

“Mia.” Remy’s roar shook the building.

“Never mind.” Darius scowled. “I don’t want to return those movies you go gaga over.”

Nia didn’t say a word just continued to their room.

“Nia.”

She ignored him. She entered their bedroom and went to one of the bookcases. Turning her body deliberately she made sure he saw when she put her hand on the book. Darius narrowed his eyes.

“You wouldn’t.” Darius crossed his arms over his chest.

She flicked the book forward. Darius lowered his arms and took a step towards her.

“Nia.”

She stared at him.

“Fine.” He bit out. “I’ll put them back.”

Having made her point, she put the book back. She went to him and kissed him before stepping back.

“Now that our negotiation has ended, I’m ready for your surrender.” She pulled her shirt over her head.

“You can’t seduce me.” Darius said.

Nia dropped her shirt and walked towards the bed. Darius groaned behind her.

“Nia.”

She laid on the bed. “Movie time.” She gestured to the TV. “Now we can enjoy my movies.”

“From the time we’ve met you’ve done things on your terms. And damn if I don’t love that about you Nia.” Darius laughed and joined her.

He pulled her against him. Darius kissed her. Nia held on. Darius knew her so well.

She pulled back. “I love you for how you accept me for who I am.”

“Always…”

“Our forever is on our terms.” She vowed.

Darius nodded. “I even love you so much I’ll watch that movie with him in it.”

“You’re not going to guilt me into not watching it.” Nia patted his chest. “Start the movie love of my life.”

Darius leaned back and sighed long and loud. “The things a Garlven does for love.”

Nia smacked him on the chest and laughed. “My gargoyle.” Nia ignored his growl.

They were together because they fit each other and accepted each other on their own terms. She knew he would do anything for her. She would also do anything for him.
